Pokémon Company International Plays X And Y Close To The Chest

by Kyle Hilliard on Jan 08, 2013 at 09:52 AM

We just found out about Pokémon X and Y this morning, but Pokémon company international is already out and about answering questions… sort of.

We asked J.C. Smith, the director of consumer marketing for the Pokémon company international, about the gameplay, the graphics, how many new Pokémon we can expect to see, and a lot more about for Pokémon X and Y. He wasn't ready to answer most of our specific questions, but he did offer a few tidbits and promised that new information on the game is coming as early as tomorrow.

Smith also assured us that Takao Unno, director of Black and White 2, and Junichi Masuda, producer of Black and White 2, enjoyed our previous interview where we asked a number of bizarre questions. We were sure that we would never be allowed to speak to them again.

Keep an eye out tomorrow for more information on Pokémon X and Y, and in the meantime check out Smith's answers below.

Pokémon X and Y looks like it could be a good fit for console as well. Why not make a Wii U version?

I can’t speak to the specifics, but traditionally Game Freak has always loved the game to be on a portable device because of the communication, trading, and the experience of taking this adventure with you. That’s why they’ve always prioritized a portable version of the game first. They’ve always liked what you can do in the real world with that.

Why haven’t we seen a console Pokémon?

It comes down to what the creators want to do. Every time I’ve heard them talk about it, it’s been about the portable experience, taking the adventure with you, being able to share it with friends, communicate, trade, battle – really encouraging that interaction

Do X and Y have a greater meaning?

I’ve heard discussion online about it after the trailer we rolled out today, but I can tell you that it makes localization very easy for this international title because all the titles worldwide, except for Japan, are Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. It adds to the international feel of the game, giving it the same title. It’s another way to unify the experience for people.

So it doesn’t have anything to do with chromosomes?

I’m not sure. That’s something I’m sure GameFreak will answer soon.

You will still be able to pick between male and female avatars, correct?

Yes, the titles they have given us are the hero and the heroine. Yes, it is certainly going to have that functionality.

Who are you picking as your starter?

I was just talking about that. For the past couple games I’ve been water or grass. I actually want to get back to fire so I am thinking Fennekin is going to be my guy.

Fennekin looks cool. I feel like Chespin sort of looks like he has a shower cap on.

Ha ha, there’s a lot of conversation about Fennekin and Froakie, but I haven’t heard as  much about Chespin. I’m sure there will be camps for each one like there always is.
