Obsidian's New RPG The Outer Worlds Channels The Best Of Fallout And Mass Effect

by Ben Reeves on Dec 06, 2018 at 09:15 PM

The studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and the Pillars of Eternity franchise just announced it is working with Take-Two Interactive's publishing label Private Division to develop an original sci-fi RPG called The Outer Worlds.

The Outer Worlds looks to be a mix of Fallout and Mass Effect as players lead a motley crew through an entire solar system and investigate a corporate conspiracy that threatens to destroy one of the Earth’s outer colonies.

Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky – two of the creators of the original Fallout series – are behind the project, and they look to bring their goofy-yet-dark sense of humor to this alternate, Victorian sci-fi future.

“It's great to be working with Tim again,” says Boyarsky. “It's rare to find a co-creator who compliments your skill set so well – Tim's great at the things I'm not and vice versa. But what we both seem to have a knack for is making in-depth single-player RPGs where the player can define their character and play the game any way they choose.”

“There's something very special about the combination of my lighter humor and Leonard's darker take on things,” adds Cain. “It affects everything in the game – the setting, the characters, the dialogs. Plus, we have a great team here at Obsidian, and we're making sure The Outer Worlds delivers what players want from a new RPG universe.”

Private Division aims to release The Outer Worlds on PS4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2019. Come back tomorrow morning around 8am CT and we’ll have more in-depth impressions from a hands-off demo.
