Giant Squid Reveals The Pathless

by Jeff Cork on Dec 06, 2018 at 09:50 PM

Giant Squid's debut release, Abzu, garnered critical acclaim for its meditative take on undersea exploration. At this evening's Game Awards, the studio shifted over to dry land. The Pathless retains the same visual flair as its predecessor, but it has a much more action-oriented focus. You play as a hunter who, along with her eagle companion, has to cleanse an island of an ancient curse.

We visited Giant Squid last month and got to see the open-world game in action. The hunter's fast and fluid pace is a far cry from how Abzu's diver navigated their underwater world. The hunter seems to have two speeds, quick and fast, and her magic bow enables her to rapidly bound from point to point in the world as she hunts down corrupted animals and fearsome deities. The Pathless is being designed to be accessible for novice players, but the team has elegantly incorporated some timing-based mechanics with the bow that reward players who push themselves to improve.

You can read more about The Pathless in our latest issue, which is now available digitally. The Pathless is planned for a 2019 release on PC and consoles.
