How Embracing Absurdity Liberated Void Bastards

by Ben Hanson on Mar 27, 2019 at 03:00 PM

One of the most promising games Microsoft was showing at GDC 2019 was a strategy-focused immersive sim named Void Bastards, which tasks players with exploring randomized spaceships and scavenging for survival. When the player character dies, you'll spawn in as a new explorer that retains all equipment and progress.

While at GDC 2019, we spoke with the game's audio director Ryan Roth (who also worked on games like The Beginner's Guide) about the game's development history and how it started out as a more serious immersive sim named False Light before shifting into the colorful, more absurd game that it is now. Watch the interview with Roth above and let us know what you think of the game's direction.
