Today Playtonic Games, a studio comprised of many former Rare developers, announced via IGN the latest character in the Yooka-Laylee roster. The successful Kickstarter harks back to the Nintendo 64 3D platformers of old, so it's only fitting that it features a character that looks like he's ripped right out of the late '90s console era. Meet Rextro-Sixtyfourus, your polygonal dinosaur pal.

Most of you probably already figured out Rex's clever name, but let's unpack it to be certain. The "Rextro" is clearly going for "retro," to cement the fact that this scanlined thunder lizard is old school. The "Sixtyfourus" portion of this name is a clear reference to the Nintendo 64, the console on which Rare won the hearts of many. Rextro's aesthetic aims to evoke the era that Yooka-Laylee is pulling from, complete with a blocky, polygonal shape and a scanline-riddled texture reminiscent of older CRT televisions.

This dinosaur, a proper relic of the past, also guards a collection of arcade machines scattered throughout Yooka-Laylee's world. Players can tackle the challenges these retro games present to earn another collectible to progress through the game.

IGN has more Yooka-Laylee news on the way, but you can also learn more about the successful Kickstarter title here.
