Pokémon Go Creators' Game Ingress Is Gettting An Anime

by Suriel Vazquez on Jul 08, 2018 at 01:11 PM

Ingress, Niantic's second location-based game and the framework for much of Pokémon Go, is getting its own anime series, called Ingress: The Animation.

Variety reports the series will be done by studio Crafter, helmed by Yuhei Sakuragi (Neon Genesis Evangelion: Impacts), and feature character designs from Takeshi Honda (Neon Genesis Evangelion). Fuji TV and Netflix will help distribute the anime worldwide.

According to Niantic founder John Hanke, “The anime peers into the ‘Ingress’ universe and allows viewers to see a part of that universe that is uniquely expressed."

According to Variety, the show will focus on Makoto and Sarah, two people in the world of Ingress, where "exotic matter is leaking into the world through portals." Makoto and Sarah, along with a third character named Jack, are pulled into the game's key conflict, between members of the Enlightened and Resistance factions (which fight for territory in the Ingress game). As this happens the crew also investigates a corporation which is exploiting the exotic matter for its own personal gain.

In addition to the anime, Ingress will also be getting a sequel in the form of Ingress Prime. The new game and anime will both launch in October. The sequel will be a reworking of the original Ingress, focusing on accessibility and learning from the lessons Niantic learned from Pokémon Go.
