Warner Bros. Responds To Bethesda Westworld Mobile Lawsuit, Calls Claim Baseless

Last week, Bethesda filed suit against Warner Bros. and Behaviour Interactive, developers of Fallout Shelter, over similarities to their new Westworld Mobile game published under Warner Bros. Bethesda alleged that Behaviour was reusing code for Westworld from Fallout Shelter, of which Bethesda owns the copyright.

Bethesda aimed their lawsuit at both Behaviour and Warner Bros. We reached out to the publisher behind games like Shadow of War and the Batman Arkham series and received the following statement:

As one of the world’s leading creators of intellectual property, including the ground-breaking television series Westworld, Warner Bros. has a deep respect for intellectual property rights.  As such, the assertions by Bethesda Softworks that Warner’s Westworld mobile game improperly used source code from Bethesda’s Fallout Shelter are as surprising as they are unsubstantiated.  Warner Bros. has been assured by the game developer, Behaviour Interactive, that Bethesda’s allegations are untrue and that none of Bethesda’s code was used in the Westworld game.  Moreover, contrary to Bethesda’s baseless accusation, Warner Bros. at no time “induced” Behaviour to use the Fallout Shelter code in Westworld.

Bethesda claims that they discovered the similarities based on a glitch present in both games, which Bethesda argues would be impossible without reusing the code made for Fallout Shelter. You can find our impressions of Westworld Mobile here, where Jeff Cork calls the game "a greedy slog."
