The new studio, staffed by some ex-Silicon Knights employees, hopes to add some RPG depth to an engaging pinball game with Rollers of the Realm.

In theory, it's a great combination. We've seen how games like Dungeon Raid have added RPG elements to familiar game mechanics like "match three," and Zen Studio's Pinball FX series has proven to be a huge hit in the downloadable space.

The game basic premise it to recast pinball by adding the puzzle and combat mechanics of an accessible RPG experience. As you progress through the main story mode, you'll unlock different character types, like rogue and mage, to join your party. Once they join, you can swap them in and out at any time. Each character is represented by a unique pinball that has special properties and abilities, which plays into basic combat, boss battles, and puzzle solving. As you'll see in the trailer below, each location on the world map holds new pinball tables that often feature unique mechanical elements as well as different enemies to tackle.

Overall, it's an extremely promising game. The idea of combining a classic, pick-up-and-play genre like pinball with some RPG-like story development and character building is a sound one; let's hope that Phantom Compass can get the basic feel of the pinball gameplay right. The game doesn't have a release date yet, but will be out before the end of the year. If you'd like to see the game on PC, go vote for it on the game's Steam Greenlight page.
