Recent 3DS release Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is plenty of fun in its own right. But it also includes a demo of next year's Resident Evil: Revelations. So what's it like?

The demo begins on a ship in the middle of the Mediterranean. You control Jill Valentine circa 2005 between Resident Evil 4 and 5 as she searches for a missing Chris Redfield. His last known coordinates point to this ship. Of course it's full of vile creatures and scheming villains.

The demo is dubbed the "Pilot Version" and may or may not take place at the beginning of the game. You walk down a hallway and some rats spring out of a panel. Rounding a corner, you see a large puddle of blood on the ground. Lightning flashes, swinging lamps, and Jill's flashlight show off the power of Capcom's MT Framework Mobile engine.

As you walk through a bathroom, some kind of monster creeps out of a stall. A quick pull of the right shoulder button brings up a first person view and the Y button fires off pistol rounds (the demo features infinite ammo so you can really unload bullets without worry).

Further along, some bats sly in through a busted window and screech past you. In the distance, you hear the sounds of struggle. When you reach the source of the mayhem, an enemy just like the bathroom creature  is holding up a crew member by the neck behind a glass panel. All of a sudden, it punches the man through the air, and he slams into the window in front of you with a sickening splat. Blood covers the entire glass panel, but you can still see two monsters feasting on the crewman.

There's nowhere else to go but into the room with the creatures. Once you do, the door slams shut and locks. Both enemies notice your presence and creep towards you. The cramped layout of the room forces you to run away, pop off a few shots, and run off again. Before long, both monsters are dead and the screen fades to black. The words "To be continued..." pop up on the screen.

While the demo is extremely brief, it's nice to see that the 3DS can handle a dark, creepy atmosphere as opposed to the more arcade-style Mercenaries game.

We've recorded the entire demo for your viewing pleasure. Just keep in mind that in order to record the screen I had to hold the system really awkwardly so pardon any parts where I suck.
