One of the biggest surprises for me this year has been Dontnod’s Life is Strange. The first chapter of the Square Enix-published episodic tale introduced compelling characters, mystery, and a level of authenticity I simply wasn’t expecting.

It’s been interesting to watch reaction to the title, especially with regard to the writing. While my daughter isn’t as old as protagonist Max, she’s nearly a teenager and shares some of the same affects.

She forces “cool” words into dialog, she embellishes her recap of her day with similar enthusiasm, and she shares some of the same social challenges present in the title. Life is Strange’s writing isn’t perfect, but I suspect I found it more relatable because I’ve got an almost-teenager in the house.

Episode two ripples the mystique of Max’s newfound power and the mysteries of the small town further into Arcadia Bay. We’ll go to new locations and meet important people only referenced so far.

If you want to stay clear of any and all spoilers, turn back now. Otherwise, know that I’ll be discussing a single scene that details how choices impact the broader game, but not anything related to the overarching mysteries.

The scene we were shown takes place in the town’s diner, where Chloe’s mother Joyce works. There, we feel the impact of one of the first episode’s big decisions. Think about what you decided to do when Chloe’s stepfather invades her room. That will come back to haunt you.

Big swaths of the dialog revolve around how that moment played out, and the relationship between the two girls will also be influenced by it. How your story plays out depends on the choices you’ve made so far and will make in the coming episodes.

Life is Strange will continue sometime in late March or early April based on what we were told at PAX. A representative told us that episode two will likely drop about seven or eight weeks after the first. For more on episode one, which was released on January 30, check out our review.
