Final Fantasy XV VR Is Missing The Excitement

by Mike Futter on Jun 14, 2016 at 05:54 AM

At its E3 2016 press conference, Sony announced a trio of VR experiences based on well-established properties. We wrote about Batman: Arkham VR, which impressed. Unfortunately, not all of the demos fared quite as well.

Final Fantasy XV VR puts players in the shoes of Prompto, one of the core game's main characters. He wields a gun, making him a good fit for a VR experience.

In the brief demo, the party confronts a behemoth. Movement is handled via warping around the battlefield (often in response to the beast's charge or swipe attacks). Combat is painfully simple, with the Move controller handling aiming. You need only press and hold the trigger to fire continuously.

It felt great to be in that world, but what I played didn't pull me into the action. What we've seen of the core Final Fantasy XV experience is exciting and engaging; the VR demo doesn't quite meet that bar. Hopefully when it launches that will have been improved.
