Here’s How Xbox One Backward Compatibility DLC Will Work

by Mike Futter on Nov 12, 2015 at 05:17 AM

Microsoft has long said that DLC will work for backward compatible games. With the New Xbox One Experience launching on November 12, we dug into exactly how that will function.

In order to access DLC, you’ll need to either purchase it on Xbox.com or via your Xbox 360 console. When asked about purchasing directly on Xbox One via an emulated dashboard and store, we were told that isn’t happening, at least not yet.

“Right now, Backward Compatibility does not emulate the Xbox 360 store and new Xbox 360 games can be purchased on your Xbox 360 or via Xbox.com,” a representative told us via email. We confirmed that this is universal, and all DLC will be supported and automatically downloaded to your Xbox One along with supported games.

“We will support both digital and disc-based entitlements for Xbox 360 games running on Xbox One,” the representative told us. Provided you own the DLC already, you should be all set once the service launches widely on November 12. If you want to purchase new add-ons, head on over the Xbox website or load up your Xbox 360.

Update: If you're in the Preview program and having trouble locating your DLC, here's how to install it. Go to your "My Games and Apps" tile. Select the game you want to install DLC for and pick "Manage Game" from the menu. Once you do, the DLC you own should show up like so:

Our Take
This is great news, especially as games that have important story DLC become part of the backward compatibility program. Microsoft suggested to us in a meeting that it might also be working on full emulation that would enable store purchases on Xbox One, but that isn’t going to be ready for the November 12 launch.
