Square Enix's Free-To-Play Spelunker World Available Today

by Marcus Stewart on Nov 11, 2015 at 07:51 AM

Today, Square Enix lauched Spelunker World for PlayStation 4. The follow-up to 2010’s Spelunker HD, the free-to-play title challenges players to explore a series of underground caverns either alone or with up to six others online.

Spelunking with friends means working together to unearth treasure and avoid dangers such as pitfalls, Indiana Jones-esque rolling boulders, and defeat cave-dwelling enemies. Spelunkers are upgraded by finding new equipment and power-ups hidden in hard-to-reach areas, meaning thorough exploration is vital. Additionally, a selection of collectible dog companions aid players by sniffing out items. For a look at what Spelunker World entails, check out the launch trailer below.

Spelunker World is a free to download, but players can purchase additional moon gems using real money. Moon gems are used to gain more continues, candy for pet digging, and increase inventory space.

To celebrate Spelunker World’s North American launch, players who start the game between today and December 2 receive ten free cakes. These special items allow pet companions to search out rare items.

Our Take
Spelunker World comes out of nowhere, but looks like it could provide some solid multiplayer fun. Also, being free-to-play definitely helps with convincing friends to take the dive with you. Free-to-play can be murky territory with in-your-face microtransations, but hopefully Spelunker World is different.
