Breaking Down The New Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer

by Andrew Reiner on Oct 19, 2015 at 06:01 PM

J. J. Abrams' and Disney's new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is loaded with emotion and shots that hark back to the glory days of the classic trilogy. Although we finally hear numerous characters talk, the story still remains a mystery. The recently released movie poster perhaps gives us the best hint as to what the Empire First Order may be up to (note the image behind Finn), but everything else is anyone's guess.

The trailer did confirm that someone, possibly Finn, Poe, or Rey, has the Force. If the dialogue in the trailer matches up with the images, we also learn that Kylo Ren is intent on finishing what Vader or the Empire started. Think about that for a second: How much do we know about the Empire or Vader's plans? The most impressive shots in the trailer of how young and Han Solo-ish Harrison Ford looks again. Chewbacca's hair looks more old manish than Solo's.

The trailer does have a handful of hidden little things that you may not have seen watching it in motion. I didn't catch most of them until I went through the trailer frame-by-frame. Here's what you may have missed:

A familiar looking trench on a snow planet. This is presumably Starkiller Base.

A huge, red laser beam. Again, is this from Starkiller Base?

We're guessing that laser blast hit a planet.

Are these the Knights of Ren? Who did they slaughter?

Is Kylo Ren searching for information using the Force? What could he be looking for? Luke?

As Han Solo shows off his holographic ball collection, he says something is true. Stories about the Empire? Luke?

This is likely Maz Kanata's pirate fortress. Note the Mandalorian flag up top and center. One of Ren's knights appears to be wearing a Mandalorian helmet.
