Disney Infinity 3.0 Piles Into Living Rooms Late August
Parents who sense a disturbance in their wallets aren't just feeling things: Disney Interactive has announced the release date for the third installment in the Disney Infinity series. Players will be able to add a little more Star Wars to their lives starting near the end of August.
There are several ways to buy Disney Infinity 3.0, which could create a bit of confusion. Here's how it all breaks down:
First, regardless of how you plan on buying the game, it's going to be available starting August 30 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. This is where the paths begin to diverge. Players can go the traditional route, purchasing the Starter Pack at retail for about $65. It includes the Disney Infinity 3.0 disc, the Star Wars Twilight of the Republic playset, the Disney Infinity base, and two figures: Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano. The game is also available as a download, and players who decide to go that route can purchase that playset (and its corresponding figures) separately.
Sony players can choose another option, too. Disney is releasing the Star Wars Saga Starter Pack for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, which includes everything in the regular Starter Pack, as well as exclusive early access to the Rise Against the Empire playset, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia figures, and the Boba Fett figure. That bundle is priced at $115.
In addition to the base game, players can purchase a variety of expansions and additional characters at launch. Standalone figures (priced at $14 each) include characters from the Star Wars Rebels TV series, including Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Sabine Wren, and Zeb Orrelios, and Disney figures based on Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Mulan, Olaf, Sam Flynn, and Quorra. There's also a playset based on Pixar's Inside Out for $35, which includes Joy and Anger figures. Sadness, Disgust, and Fear can be purchased individually. There's also a Power Disc pack based on the film Tomorrowland.
Players who pre-order the game from participating retailers can also get early access to the Toy Box Takeover game at no additional charge. It's scheduled for a fall release, and it's ordinarily priced at $20.
Our Take
You can easily drop upwards of $300 on all of this, if you're planning on going all-in with 3.0 – and that's just the launch lineup. With that kind of money in play, it's no surprise that competition is getting increasingly fierce in this space. Disney made a smart play here by getting in front of September, which is when Activision's latest Skylanders game and Warner's new Lego Dimensions are hitting.
