The World Video Game Hall of Fame, housed in The Strong National Museum of Play alongside the Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, NY, has announced its finalists for this year. This year marks the opening of the collection, with 15 titles up for consideration in the inaugural class.

Under consideration are the following titles:

  • Angry Birds (2009)
  • Doom (1993)
  • FIFA (1993)
  • The Legend of Zelda (1986)
  • Minecraft (2009)
  • The Oregon Trail (1971)
  • Pac-Man (1980)
  • Pokémon (1996)
  • Pong (1972)
  • The Sims (2000)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)
  • Space Invaders (1978)
  • Super Mario Bros. (1985)
  • Tetris (1984)
  • World of Warcraft (2004)

Games chosen for induction will be announced at The Strong museum on Thursday, June 4 at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. Nominations are currently open for the 2016 class, and anyone can submit a pick via The Strong’s website.

The World Video Game Hall of Fame is part of a larger structure that houses a number of interactive activities for families, a large, permanent Sesame Street exhibit, a mock Wegman’s grocery store in which children can shop and role play as clerks, storybook and dress-up areas, and a butterfly house.

The museum was renovated between 2004 and 2006, and subsequently opened the International Center for the History of Electronic Games in 2009 and has built a sizable collection of artifacts and reference materials. For more on the museum, you can visit the official website.

Our Take
The titles up for inclusion are a fascinating cross-section of generations, genres, and platforms. Many of these are important benchmarks in the evolution of the medium (yes, that includes Angry Birds), and I’m looking forward to finding out which make the cut.
