Activision Touts Dominating Sales In 2014

by Jeff Marchiafava on Dec 12, 2014 at 06:04 AM

We're still a few weeks away from closing out 2014, but that's not stopping Activision from celebrating a little early. Hot off the heels of last night's November NPD numbers, Activision has announced that the two best-selling console games of the year belong to them.

According to Activision, the number-one and number-two best-selling games of 2014 are Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare – which has only been out for a month – and Destiny, respectively. Activision also says that Skylanders is the top-selling kids franchise of the year, and that Destiny is the top-selling new IP. Finally, Advanced Warfare's strong sales make this the sixth year in a row that Call of Duty is the best-selling game of November.

Our Take
Activision's massive success will undoubtedly be seen as bad news to a lot of gamers who think that: a.) Call of Duty is just "more of the same," b.) Destiny is a boring grind fest, and c.) Skylanders is a money trap aimed at kids. Unfortunately for them, the majority of gamers clearly disagree, and continue to happily support the publisher's biggest franchises. In that sense, it's hard to argue against Activision's success, and the publisher has every right to celebrate its performance in 2014.
