Report: Use Amiibos To Dress Up Your Miis In Mario Kart 8

by Ben Reeves on Nov 04, 2014 at 10:22 AM

Looking for a reason to kick the tires and take Mario Kart 8 for another spin around the Mushroom Kingdom? Nintendo’s NFC-powered Amiibo figures will allow users to unlock a series of new costumes for the game, essentially letting Link and Samus join the Mario Kart crew.

This cat jumped out of the bag a little early as a briefly published page on Nintendo's site (which has since been taken down and archived by Archive.today) showed that an upcoming update – set for November 13 – will unlock amiibo support for Mario Kart 8. This update will allow users to dress up their Mii racers like: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Link, Kirby, Captain Falcon, Samus, and Fox McCloud.

Check out some of the amiibo’s other crazy features in for Super Smash Bros. in this bizarre video from Nintendo.

Our Take
This is a cool concept. I'd rather be able to unlock a real version of Kirby and Samus, instead of just costumes, but this is still neat and it's nice to see that Nintendo is supporting other titles with amiibos. Let's hope that a future update also adds learning NPC support similar to Super Smash Bros.
