Ryse's Challenge Editor Canceled

by Joe Juba on Feb 21, 2014 at 05:49 AM

If you were looking forward to the upcoming challenge editor for the Xbox One launch title Ryse, you should brace for some bad news. Crytek and Microsoft have put a stop to their plans to release the mode.

In a statement to Polygon, Microsoft explained the cancellation and the plan going forward: "After careful consideration, we have decided to cease development on Ryse: Son of Rome's challenge editor and focus on improving and expanding fans' experience with the game through both free content updates and purchased add-on packs."

The challenge editor would have let players use SmartGlass to assemble various challenges and push them out to the community. Instead of that functionality, players can expect more DLC like Mars' Chosen.

Our Take
It's always disappointing (especially for hardcore fans) when promised features don't come to fruition. I'm still disappointed about the lack of extra Heavy Rain episodes. However, from a business standpoint, this might make sense. Ryse did not score very well, so spending resources on expanding a game with a small audience may not be efficient. Even so, it's too bad for the people who were hoping to use the challenge editor.
