Reader Discussion: What's Your Favorite Video Game Movie?

by Kyle Hilliard on Nov 10, 2013 at 07:44 AM

Blizzard spent some time detailing its upcoming World of Warcraft movie adaptation yesterday, and it made us think about the infrequent overlap of video games and movies. Do you have a favorite? Do you have a least-favorite?

In recent years, there have been some excellent films about video games, like Wreck-It Ralph, Indie Game: The Movie, and The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, but movies based on video game licenses still seem to be coming up short. We all remember (or choose to forget) Super Mario Bros. and the films from Uwe Boll. The Resident Evil films have become so far removed from its source material that its like a separate franchise – or at least, I assume it is. I've only seen the first one.

I have a lot of love for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which isn't about or based on a video game, but is clearly influenced by them. I also remember liking the original Silent Hill film, but I haven't watched it since I saw it in theatres. I wasn't so much impressed by the movie, as much as I was impressed by the fact that the film makers had clearly played the game, and might have even been fans.

Are there any video game movies that you like? Do you think there will ever be a fantastic movie based on a video game? Do you think the World of Warcraft movie will be good? Sound off below.
