The Lockheed Martin SR-72 Looks Ripped From Mass Effect

by Mike Futter on Nov 01, 2013 at 11:25 AM

It’s certainly no Normandy SR2 (or even the SR1), but the new Lockheed Martin SR-72 could be their predecessor. The new high altitude craft can reportedly reach speeds of up to Mach 6, twice that of the SR-71 that has been a fixture in geek culture and featured in X-Men and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

The last SR-71 Blackbird was decommissioned nearly 10 years ago. Its successor is designed for reconnaissance, intelligence, and military strikes. According to Lockheed Martin’s Brad Leland, the SR-72’s speed would make it significantly more difficult for mobile targets to hide, something that was still a problem with the SR-71.

As for its looks, you can read the technical explanation for all of its angles and curves in the exclusive Aviation Week story. Or, you can just imagine that the team at Lockheed Martin are big fans of BioWare’s Mass Effect series.
