Grand Theft Auto V Will Be On Two Discs, No Switching

by Mike Futter on Jul 02, 2013 at 05:11 AM

As this generation wore on, Xbox 360 users have gotten used to swapping discs mid-game. Assassin's Creed 3, Rage, L.A. Noire, and The Witcher 2 are just some of the titles that have had Xbox 360 users fumbling to swap DVDs. Grand Theft Auto V will ship on two discs, but Rockstar has figured out how to make it more convenient.

In a question and answer post on Rockstar's website, the publisher has assured eager inquirers that they won't need to leave their seats mid-game. Grand Theft Auto V's first disc will be used for installation purposes, and the second disc will run the game.

The 8 GB of content can be placed on the hard drive or a USB drive. The latter must be USB 2.0 compliant and have a read/write speed of 15 MB. Furthermore, Rockstar recommends a new USB drive for optimum performance. The PlayStation 3 version only has one disc, but users will experience an automatic installation upon placing the disc in the drive. For more on Grand Theft Auto V, we have previews on the world, heists, and combat. You might also recall that Grand Theft Auto V adorned our December 2012 cover.

Our Take
I would not recommend using a USB thumb drive to install mandatory game content unless you have no other choice. An external USB hard drive would be the way to go if you don't have enough internal storage for you Xbox 360. If you have the available cash and you're serious about playing Grand Theft Auto V, a hard drive is a worthwhile investment.
