Microsoft Gives UK Gamers MS Points After Xbox Awards Security Breach
A voting site for the Xbox Entertainment Awards suffered a security breach that leaked personal information of over 2,000 gamers in the U.K. Now the company has given them 1,600 MS points as a gesture of apology.
After voting for the UK Microsoft Entertainment Awards, some gamers discovered that their names, email address, Gamertags, and birthdates had been published on a now-taken-down web page.
In an email sent to the affected gamers, Microsoft attached a code for 1,600 MS Points for Xbox Live and a statement that read:
"The voting app inadvertently disclosed a limited amount of participants' personal data for a brief time to a non-public web page. We took immediate steps to remove the application from its UK Facebook page and sincerely apologise for the error," said MS in the statement.
"The information available for that brief time was generated from the prize draw form you filled in and was limited to your name, email address, Gamertag and date of birth. No other information was recorded or available. The information disclosed cannot be used to directly compromise your Microsoft Account. However, to ensure that you have the appropriate security in place on your Microsoft Account we highly recommend you visit www.xbox.com/security."
