3DS Sales Outpacing DS In The First Year

by Jim Reilly on Nov 11, 2011 at 09:54 AM

Nintendo said today that through the first eight months in the U.S., the Nintendo 3DS is outpacing first year sales of the original DS released in 2004

According to retail tracking firm NPD, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 1.65 million units to date in the U.S. Nintendo notes the Nintendo DS sold 2.37 million units in its first 12 months, with 50 percent of sales occurring during the holiday season. With the releases of Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land, Nintendo expects 3DS sales exceed the DS through the remaining four months.

“With a massive lineup of software on the way and the first-year sales record of Nintendo DS in its sights, Nintendo 3DS enters its first holiday season with a full head of steam,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

Additionally, Nintendo sold 675,000 combined hardware units in October, according to NPD. This includes more than 250,000 units of Nintendo 3DS, nearly 250,000 Wii systems and 180,000 units of the Nintendo DS family of systems.
