Meet Your FIFA 12 Cover Athletes

by Adam Biessener on Aug 01, 2011 at 12:03 PM

I'll forgive our American readers for not knowing about these guys. I'm told that the gentlemen gracing the various worldwide covers of EA's annual soccer series are rather big deals the sport the rest of the world means when they say football, though.

As is traditional, the many regions that EA releases the game in have different cover athletes. Check out the full list below:

  • Global: Wayne Rooney, Kaká
  • North America: Wayne Rooney, two players to be named later
  • United Kingdom: Wayne Rooney, Jack Wilshere
  • Spain: Gerard Piqué, Xabi Alonso
  • Russia: Vasili Berezutski, Kaká
  • France: Wayne Rooney, Karim Benzema, Philippe Mexès
  • Italy: Wayne Rooney, Giampaolo Pazzini, Philippe Mexès
  • Australia: Wayne Rooney, Tim Cahill, Kaká
  • Hungary: Balázs Dzsudzsák
  • Germany: Mats Hummels

Personally, I'm disappointed that there's no octopus on the cover. That, or Hope Solo. I'm pretty sure from my viewing of the American media's coverage of the sport that those are the two most important players in soccer. U.S. soccer fans, don't give up hope (pun probably not intended) though, you can be sure EA will be soon announcing the two remaining cover stars to go along with Wayne Rooney. One will be some MLS dude, and the other will probably be Kaká. What about the great USMNT savior, Jürgen Klinsmann? Surely he already deserves a spot on this soccer version of Mount Rushmore.
