Call Of Duty Gets Its Own QuakeCon

by Ben Reeves on Jun 30, 2011 at 12:00 AM

Love Call of Duty and want to share your enthusiasm by participating in multiplayer tournaments and dressing up like Captain John Price? Activision just announced a 2-day event called Call of Duty XP 2011.

Activision is hoping to attract over 6,000 Call of Duty fans to LA this September for their first Call of Duty XP convention. Activision Blizzard CEO Eric Hirshberg told us, “Everything you could possibly want from a live Call of Duty experience, we're going to try and deliver to people."

Fans who attend this 2-day event can expect to hear more details about Modern Warfare 3, including multiplayer details, a first look at the full feature set for Call of Duty Elite, and have an opportunity to play the game for the themselves. The full list of events makes this conference sound like quite a carnival:

  • Activision, and co-sponsor Xbox 360, will host a live, bracketed 32-team tournament with millions in cash and prizes.
  • Full-scale sets of the Scrapyard multiplayer map and The Pit from Modern Warfare 2 will be available for paintball tournaments.
  • Players can eat lunch at Modern Warfare 2's Burger Town.
  • The event will be beamed worldwide via videos on social, digital media. Behind-the-scenes videos, uploads, photographs will be available for everyone to experience.
  • A Call of Duty armory and museum will be on site for players to explore.
  • Developers attending the event will deliver keynote addresses and panel discussions.

When we asked Hirshberg if Call of Duty XP could become a yearly event like QuakeCon? He responded, "That's something we're clearly considering, but we'll have to wait and see…It's going to be Call of Duty to the nth degree, from the grandest design down to the smallest detail."

Tickets go on sale July 19 for $150 apiece, and 100% of the proceeds will go towards the Call of Duty Endowment – a foundation that helps veterans find jobs. If you’re interested in attending the show yourself, check out the Call of Duty website to sign up.

“I assure you that anyone who comes to this event will not leave empty handed," Hirshberg teased.
