Black Designer Stuart Black Joins City Interactive

by Matt Bertz on Dec 01, 2010 at 05:40 AM

For a man who's made more waves criticizing other shooters than making his own, Stuart Black just made a bold move in joining Sniper: Ghost Warrior publisher City Interactive to create yet another World War II based shooter, arguably the most overplayed setting in the FPS genre.

The former Black senior designer and Bodycount creative director, whose last shooter shipped in 2006, turned heads last February when he took a vague shot at the popular shooter Gears of War. "There’s a lot of cover-based shooters out at the moment. But when a guy hunkers down behind something, you've just got to sit there and wait for him to pop his head up. Pops up, couple of bullets to his head, pops back down again… and I’m waiting for him to pop back up again? F***ing boring. I can’t be bothered hanging around like that," he told OXM.

Then in July, he abruptly announced plans to leave Codemasters after finishing his work on Bodycount in October. The game hasn't released yet (it's now due out in the spring), but obviously that didn't stop Black from jumping ship to join City Interactive.

After countless years of multiple World War II based games, most of us have liberated Stalingrad and stormed the beaches of Normandy more times than we care to remember. To recapture people's attention, the Poland-based publisher has licensed Crytek's impressive CryEngine 3 to power the game. Black, who is building a new London-based studio for the project, says the game is "an exciting new story-driven WWII shooter that will emphasize high adventure in a genre that's become bogged down in reverence and historical accuracy."

Given the over-the-top themes of both Black and Bodycount, we expect this unnamed game to turn its nose up at realism and turn up the Nazi slaughter to 11.
