Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Inspired By Pokémon, SimCity

by Phil Kollar on Jun 03, 2010 at 11:02 AM

If you're just dying for more information on Konami's latest PSP spin-off of the Metal Gear franchise, here's a hot tip you may not have expected: Apparently one of Kojima's biggest inspirations for the game is Nintendo's long-running handheld collectathon series, Pokémon.

Speaking to CVG, Metal Gear Solid mastermind Hideo Kojima revealed that where previous Metal Gear games carried the tag "Tactical Espionage Action," Peace Walker is about "Tactical Espionage Operation." Kojima explained the shift in tone: "There's that nuance of running and maintaining Big Boss' army while handling sneaking missions."

Finally, in the most surprising and interesting part of the interview, Kojima broke down the make-up of Peace Walker by comparing it to other games:

"You won't 'get' it until you play it. It's like no game before. It's part MGS, part Monster Hunter and part Pokémon -- and it's even got a bit of SimCity to it."

Resident Pokémaster Annette Gonzalez was baffled by the comparison, pondering aloud, "Do you collect soldiers in balls?" A fair question, and one we won't be able to answer until Peace Walker comes out on June 8.
