Sony Leapfrogs Microsoft With PSN Updates

by Matthew Kato on Apr 19, 2010 at 06:30 AM

Sony says that in May, releases such as DLC, updates, and add-on content will appear on the PlayStation Store Tuesday instead of Thursday. This move forward puts it at more on a level playing field with competitors Microsoft and Nintendo.

Sony's previous Thursday release date put it at a disadvantage to XBLA since 360 fans would get their DLC, Rock Band songs, etc. on Tuesday or Wednesday (depending on the content), with Sony playing second fiddle later in the week. Starting with the May 4th update, however, Sony fans can now get their DLC, PS3 updates, and other content on time with everyone else. For its part, Nintendo goes on Monday, but that's probably less of a competition with the other platforms, since we don't imagine there is a lot of DLC that cross-pollinates and competes among all three.

Sony's move puts it ahead of Microsoft, and it will be interesting to see if the company responds in any way to grab the semi-exclusive advantage it used to enjoy.
