by Game Informer Editorial on Nov 02, 2017 at 10:48 AM

We've got another short and sweet Blog Herding this week with plenty of reviews, updates, and opinions. Get reading!

Community Blogs For October 26 – November 1:

Japanese Game Developers Understand The Value of Ignoring Their Audience
Doctor Apozem makes the argument that Japanese video game developers are ignoring their audience to instead indulge in delight. It uses some interesting examples to drive home the point, but I think the industry just kind of ebbs and flows in different directions at different times. Though I do agree that Nippon has been killing it lately in the video game universe.

Gerardo's Q3 2017 Backlog Update: Oldies Come Back + Life Update
GerardoExber isn't afraid to say that his backlog hasn't been tended to much thanks to Persona 5. Instead of beating 5 to 10 games in a month (I wish I could beat one!), he beat about five in two months. We also get a little update on our blogger's life, and he's been doing great!

Game-making Challenge of Thanksgiving!
StarterPack is holding a challenge that is due on the 28th. This challenge is all about what two genres would mix well. You can read more details in the blog, and also ask any questions you may have.

The Best Games Period – Episode 80 – Doom (1993) vs. Doom (2016)
Jack Gardner is joined by Joseph Lopes on this episode that is all about Doom. Which Doom? Both, err, Dooms – the first and the latest. It's hard to pit games against each other that are worlds apart at this point, but it's a fun premise.

Community Reviews:

Metroid Samus Returns
Justin Mikos dives into a game that seems to have quickly dropped off the radar of the gaming world. But you should definitely not miss out on this new game featuring Nintendo's best heroine. Justin writes, "What makes Samus Returns so special, though, is that it delivers both as a remake and as a new experience...it nails all of my favorite memories of Metroid II..."

South Park: The Fractured But Whole (Review)
The new South Park game has been loved by a whole host of people, and Zack Burrows is...kind of in that boat? The reviewer loved it, but can't recommend it. "Despite having one of my favorite combat systems of the year, nearly everything else about the game is a giant disappointment." Plus, technical issues on the PS4 sound brutal.

Writing Challenge:

What's the biggest mistake you've ever made in a game, or the biggest mistake a game has ever made? I didn't make it, but a buddy of mine accidentally saved over my cousin's Final Fantasy VIII save file when he was about 30-plus hours in. That wasn't a good moment to be a part of.
