Unboxing The Destiny 2 Collector’s Edition

by Matt Miller on Sep 05, 2017 at 05:00 PM

Along with the surprise opening of the Destiny 2 servers, we’re finally getting our own hands-on chance to check out the collector’s edition of the game. Like the digital deluxe version, the collector’s edition includes several in-game bonuses, including eventual access to the first and second expansion to Destiny 2, access to a legendary sword, a legendary emote, and a Cabal Empire-themed emblem.

In addition, the collector’s edition (which retails for $249.99, if you can manage to track down a copy) includes several physical items to help fill out your Destiny collection.

The outer slipcase and main box look great, with start black exterior housing all the embedded items. Everything fits well in its own spot, which should appeal to fans who have a thing for organization.

The nicest item, in our estimation, is the 15” “Frontier Bag,” a beautifully crafted fabric bag with plenty of Destiny iconography carved into its surfaces. The bag has a neat feature allowing you to customize it to be worn as either a backpack or a messenger bag.

In addition, the CE includes a fun survival-themed item (which can handily be strapped to the messenger bag). Enclosed within several embedded pockets, this oddly shaped item can be broken apart to access a solar-powered USB charger, a survival solar blanket, and a paracord.

The Cabal-themed Collector’s Box is a cardboard box stylized to look like a ancient tome, and within are several goodies related to the new main bad guys of the game, including a schematic of what appears to be the Cabal power structure, several postcard images, and Cabal military pawns, so you can enact all your little military planning fantasies.

For lore fans, the included booklet (bottom left of the picture above) explores secrets of the Cabal Empire, and includes some gorgeous new artwork that helps tell the story of the heretofore mysterious space dominion.

Last but not least, the limited edition Steelbook case houses a physical disc copy of Destiny 2, and the case can sit proudly by your TV as you play, if that’s your thing.

The Destiny 2 Collector’s Edition comes with a hefty price tag, but serious collectors may find some fun content to explore inside. The fabric bag, in particular, is a neat item, but it’s so beautifully crafted it might be hard to convince yourself to use it in the real world. To be frank, I’ve played enough Destiny at this point to know that the real reward for many players is likely to be the in-game bonuses; remember, if that’s what you want, some of the lower cost SKUs (including the $99 Digital Deluxe Edition) also include those in-game rewards.

Destiny 2 servers are live now, and all players can expect to get their copies and have access by September 6 at midnight, depending on how soon your local retailer is willing to put a copy in your hands. Our review isn't ready yet, but for some early impressions of the game, head here.
