Reader Discussion: What Games Do You Want To Be Able To Download?
Lately, I have struggled with splitting my time between playing current titles and playing older ones. Too many games exist that I never tried out – either because I wasn’t old enough to hold a controller or because I just didn’t play a title around its release window.
Most recently, I desperately want to play the classic RPG Earthbound. Not only do I not own an SNES, I also don’t have $200 to drop on a copy of the game. Thankfully, the title will be coming to Virtual Console, making the adventure more accessible to those who missed it the first time around.
Playing classics at a reduced price has become even more common with the growing number of downloadable titles available on PSN, XBLA, Steam, and Nintendo’s Virtual Console. But, many are still left out of the loop.
Not only is this an issue with older games, but also with downloadable versions that have not been imported. For example, I have previously mentioned my love of Brave Fencer Musashi. That title is available on the Japanese PlayStation store for a reasonable 600 yen – roughly six dollars. This is undeniably a much more affordable option than tracking down a copy on eBay.
Even when the older games I want to play are not outrageously priced because of their rarity, they are often priced similarly to current-gen titles. Although I would like to play many older titles and broaden my gaming knowledge, I have a very hard time convincing myself it is worth the extra money. I play games; I don’t have the income as a college student to collect them.
So until I make the disposable income to start a decent collection, I will be waiting for many titles to become available for download.
