Minecraft's PC, Mac Sales Surpass 22 Million Mark

by Jeff Cork on Jan 05, 2016 at 03:58 AM

Minecraft continues to sell at an astonishing rate, with PC and Mac sales blazing past the 22 million mark. And if you think that anyone who could possibly be interested in Mojang's brick-building game has already purchased the game, think again. According to the game's official stat page, more than 12,000 people bought the game over the past 24 hours.

At the time this was published, the game has been purchased on those platforms by 22,074,433 people, with 12,955 of those sales coming in the past 24 hours. In addition to the PC and Mac versions, the game is available on consoles and mobile devices – including, most recently, the Wii U. The PC version remains one of the most popular ways to enjoy the game, however, with a seemingly unending supply of mods and other interest-extending add-ons.

Our Take
It's easy to forget just how ubiquitous this game is, but I'm reminded just about every time I go to a store. If it's not a huge section of toys devoted to foam-rubber pickaxes and collectible figures, it's the multitude of kids sporting apparel with Minecraft Steve on it. Even if your own enthusiasm has dimmed for the game over the years, there are thousands of other ready to pony up the cash and take your place. It's certainly been a dependable source of cash for Microsoft since the company bought Mojang in 2014.
