Sony Stops Updating PlayStation Mobile For Android

by Harry Mackin on Aug 06, 2014 at 08:34 AM

Sony announced today that PlayStation Mobile, a mobile game initiative which enables PlayStation content such as select PS One games and PlayStation Store titles on select “PlayStation certified” mobile devices, will no longer be supported on Android. PlayStation Mobile will continue to be available on certified devices using Android 4.4.2 and below, but newer devices may not have access to the store or be able to play games properly, and devices running the upcoming Android L will have no PlayStation Mobile features at all.

PlayStation Mobile launched two years ago. The service features over 50 free-to-play games, including some, like Velocity, which were originally developed specifically for it. PS Mobile functions primarily as a means of making PS One titles and PlayStation affiliated Indie games available via mobile devices, but its success has been questionable. Sony has struggled to find games to put on the service, and over time many of the titles appearing on PlayStation Mobile were released separately on Vita first.

Our Take
It’s too bad to see services like this taken away, but given Sony’s push to court Indie developers, it seems unlikely that they’d get rid of their means of making Indie games readily available on mobile devices without some sort of new system to replace it in the works.
