Australian Government Invests $20 Million In Games Industry

by Ben Reeves on Feb 18, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Australia's government-run funding organization Screen Australia is investing $20 million to help boost local game development and counteract job migration.

"These programs released in draft today go a long way towards realising [sic] a strong and sustainable Australian games development sector, to ensure we tap into the huge global appetite for interactive entertainment," said Screen Australia's COO Fiona Cameron.

Interestingly, Screen Australia also pointed to Real Racing, Fruit Ninja, and L.A. Noire as great examples of Australian-developed games. However, Real Racing developer Firemonkeys is actually owned by U.S.-based Electronic Arts, and L.A. Noire ended up costing Team Bondi so much money that the studio closed down after the title shipped, so maybe those aren't great examples after all.

On the other hand, Fruit Ninja developer, Half Brick, also developed Jetpack Joyride and we wouldn't mind if Australia developed a few more games of that caliber.
