Some Facebook Games' Communications Are Jammed

by Joe Juba on Nov 02, 2010 at 08:33 AM

A few weeks back, the Wall Street Journal revealed that certain Facebook applications were transmitting user data to third-party data miners. Now, Facebook is doing something about it.

In Mike Vernal's developer blog, he explains the situation and the steps the social media giant is taking to make things right:

"[W]e are taking action against these developers by instituting a 6-month full moratorium on their access to Facebook communication channels, and we will require these developers to submit their data practices to an audit in the future to confirm that they are in compliance with our policies.”

The offending developers aren't identified specifically, but Farmville was named in the Wall Street Journal's initial report. Additionally, Inside Social Games is reporting that many titles from Lolapps (such as Critter Island) have had their communication channels blocked.

It would be nice to say that this is a victory for online privacy issues, but the real victory would have been if this had never happened in the first place.
