Update: 125-Hour Charity Gaming Marathon Is Underway

by Annette Gonzalez on May 03, 2010 at 01:50 PM

UPDATE: The Penguins in the Desert Productions team is currently hosting a live gaming marathon to support Big Brothers Big Sisters St. Catharines - Thorold & District. The team has passed the 60-hour mark and as of earlier today have raised $2,570, which is just half way to their goal of $5,000. For every thousand that is raised, there is enough money to match a child with a mentor who wouldn't have had the opportunity otherwise.

Money raised during this event goes toward the application process for parent, child, and volunteer, background checks, volunteer training and screening, child safety training, match monitoring, and more.

Games played so far based on public votes include God of War III, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Pokémon Snap, Donkey Kong 64, Left 4 Dead 2, Metal Gear Solid, GoldenEye, and Ocarina of Time! The marathon will continue until midnight Wednesday (EST). Voting for upcoming titles will continue over the course of the marathon.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Penguins in the Desert Productions team, the same team behind The Zelda Marathon, will soon host another gaming marathon to support Big Brothers Big Sisters St. Catharines - Thorold & District. This fundraising effort will support mentorship programs, future fundraisers and making successful matches for children in the program.

The "mystery" behind the marathon is that supporters will get to vote which games will be played. The team has put together a list of 50 games to choose from. Games voted into the top 20 will be entered in a lottery. The Penguins team will play whichever games are drawn for 125 consecutive hours.

Last November's Zelda marathon raised nearly $3,000 for the charity, and this time around the team aims for a $5,000 goal. Donations can be made during the event via widget that will be available on their website.

You can catch all the action as The Mystery Marathon broadcasts live on the team's website from Big Brothers Big Sisters St. Catharines location on April 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
