Report: First Female Overwatch League Athlete Joins Shanghai Dragons

by Imran Khan on Feb 06, 2018 at 06:18 PM

Kim "Geguri" Se-yeon is set to join the Shanghai Dragons, reports ESPN. If made official, Geguri will be the first woman to join the entire league.

Geguri, who plays off-tank, will reportedly be joined by Lee "Fearless" Eui-Seok, Cheon "Ado" Ki-hyun, and an unnamed Chinese player on the Shanghai Dragons. The team has had a disappointing debut in the competitive Overwatch season so far, "currently sitting last in the standings without a match victory thus far, accumulating a 4-33 map record and 0-8 match record," according to ESPN. The team only has two more games in stage one, which could easily end without a single win if things don't change.

Geguri, as mentioned, would be the first female competitor in the entire Overwatch League, a criticism that has haunted the league and Blizzard since the initial team reveal. This addition would also make Geguri one of the only women playing at the highest level in esports in their respective games.

ESPN reports that the announcement should follow within the next couple of weeks.

Our Take
While Overwatch League should diversify, hopefully Shanghai Dragons is making a team that really works for them. They can't afford to keep going at this current pace.
