Injustice 2's Super Moves Contain A Hidden Minigame

by Suriel Vazquez on May 20, 2017 at 11:42 AM

Injustice 2's super moves are flashy, high-octane abilities that can turn the tide of battle. But supers in most fighting games are also cutscenes, which can slow down the pace of a match as one player watches their opponent beat up on them. Not in Injustice 2.

Players have discovered that if, as the attacker, you press the heavy attack button in time with the hits of the super, you can slightly increase the damage of each hit. The defender can do the same to decrease the damage. Here's a video showing off the attack damage bonus (though lopsided, since it's a level 20 Aquaman hitting a level 1 Superman) from user Enkindu (via Shoryuken):

And from the defending side, from Eventhubs.

We were able to test this ourselves and also found that, depending on how well you time each button press, you can change the damage of the super by varying amounts (one icon simply shows a shield, while another will have a more prominent flash along with the shield, the latter of which deals less damage).

The amount of damage reduced isn't much (about 1 to 3 points depending on your attack and defense values relative to your opponent), but it's an extra bit of knowledge that could mean the difference between victory and defeat in close matches.

Our Take
Considering Injustice 2 is meant to be a fighter with an emphasis on fun over balance (though it can manage both), I don't have a problem with this. The timing seems tough, too (I wasn't able to do it consistently in my tests), so it may not be something that happens often online. Expect to see this add an extra bit of excitement at tournaments, though: Will a super move win the round? If the defender can pull it off, maybe not!
