Forrest Whitaker’s Rogue One Character Connects Movies To Animated Series

by Mike Futter on Jun 23, 2016 at 05:26 AM

When Disney drew a line in the sand between the spiraling Star Wars extended universe and a smaller body of official stories, fans were outraged. However, Lucasfilm is making the most of what’s still available to them.

Rogue One will see an original character from The Clone Wars animated series come to life. Entertainment Weekly reports that Forrest Whitaker is playing Saw Gerrera, who was introduced as an anti-Separatist fighter in the fifth season of the cartoon.

Gerrera encounters Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano, who train him and his band of guerrilla fighters. He’s had a hard life since we were introduced to him at a younger age.

“Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him.”

You can read more about Rogue One, which will also feature Darth Vader (as previously indicated in accidentally available documents), at Entertainment Weekly.

Rogue One will be out in theaters December 16, 2016.
