Marvel's Cinematic Universe to Be 'Distinctly Different' In Phase Four
Marvel's Cinematic Universe is currently in 'Phase Three,' the third chapter of interconnected stories that sees Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Ant-Man, and other heroes coming together to combat universe-threatening foes. Phase Three kicks off with this summer's Captain America: Civil War and is tentatively scheduled to conclude in 2019 with either The Avengers: Infinity War Part II or Inhumans. Phase Four should begin in 2020.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios' president Kevin Feige talked briefly about what moviegoers can expect from Marvel's Cinematic Universe in Phase Four. "I think there will be a finality to moments of Phase Three, as well as new beginnings that will mark a different, a very different, a distinctively different chapter in what will someday be a complete first saga made up of three phases," he said.
If Marvel's film universe follows a similar path to the comic books, we wouldn't be surprised if part of the "new beginning" is different characters stepping in to continue the legacies of Iron Man and Captain America. Robert Downey, Jr. has been playing Iron Man since 2008, and while it seems like he can't get enough of this role, we can't see him doing it much longer. We doubt Marvel will move away from the heavy hitters in its universe, but there room to bring new faces to the silver screen as well. Odds are part of phase four will be sequels to Doctor Strange and Black Panther, should they find box office success in their debuts.
