Pre-Register For A New Nintendo Account And Miitomo App Now

by Mike Futter on Feb 17, 2016 at 02:49 AM

While the Nintendo-loving world still mourns the loss of Club Nintendo and its kitschy rewards, we can finally start to put that hurt behind us. Starting today, you can pre-register for a new Nintendo Account and the company’s first smartphone app, Miitomo.

Registering early will not only lock in your username, but will also give you a Platinum Point bonus. This currency replaces the coins earned from registering games and completing surveys under the old Club Nintendo system.

Miitomo uses the Nintendo Wii, Wii U, and 3DS Mii characters to have conversations with friends. The publisher says that more than 200 million of the paper doll-like creations exist today.

As players respond to question prompts, the Miitomo app will create conversations among friends. In some ways, this mirrors the 3DS’ Tomodachi Life.

Miitomo and the My Nintendo rewards program are due to launch in March. Miitomo is “free-to-start,” with in-game purchases. Players will earn Miitomo coins to buy new customizations, but can also acquire them through real-money transactions.

Our Take
This isn’t the most exciting mobile premiere for Nintendo, but it is safe. Tomodachi Life has shipped nearly 5 million units as of December 31, 2015. This allows Nintendo to get the kinks out before it attempts to deliver something more firmly rooted in the game category.
