Call of Duty And Vice Tag-Team For Short Video Exploring Private Military Contractors

by Matt Bertz on Jul 27, 2014 at 06:49 AM

Back when we announced the new Call of Duty game from Sledgehammer Games on our June cover, Activision and Vice teased the new threat facing the world with a three-minute primer on privatized armies.

In Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the enemy isn't a venomous dictator or a rogue terrorist organization. Instead, the heroes face off against a private military contractor gone rogue, Atlas, led by an overzealous CEO with designs on global domination (played by House of Cards star Kevin Spacey). This threat is fictional, but the expansion of corporate militaries is very real.

Following up on their three minute exploration of the topic, Activision and Vice have returned with a deeper dive chronicling the role of PMCs in the modern world.

Our Take
With involvement in both the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Far Cry 4 press campaigns, Vice is taking a more prominent role in video game marketing in recent months. We're curious if other publishers plan to jump on board to give their games an "edginess" they otherwise may lack.
