Bungie Dissects Master Chief's Creation

by Matt Miller on Feb 02, 2011 at 06:15 AM

A new interview with Bungie examines the development and importance of the franchise's central hero.

For many players, the first Halo game was a console revelation. Not only was Halo: Combat Evolved a great, fast-paced shooter, but it had a deep fictional backdrop that fans immediately wanted to learn more about. Especially in the early days of the franchise, a lot of that excitement surrounding the game focused on its protagonist, a quiet but nearly super-heroic soldier who went by the moniker Master Chief.

A new interview by Industry Gamers collects some insight from Bungie's Joseph Staten about the creation of this iconic character. Staten explains the degree to which Master Chief's coolness was established by the way the world reacted to him, and what fueled the initial concept of the character. Staten also discusses why the games always remained so light on background for the character, while the expanded universe of books and comics went into so much more detail. There's some interesting tidbits about the relationship between Master Chief and Cortana in there as well.

For Halo fans, it's a great read. Check out the full interview.
