Sony's Kaz Hirai Talks About PSP2 & New Smart Phone
For a pair of devices that haven't been announced, Sony sure isn't downplaying the official unofficial existence of the PSP2 and the PlayStation Phone. Recently Kaz Hirai added fuel to the fire with some comments about the gadgets.
Talking to the New York Times, about handheld gaming challengers like the iPhone and Android devices, Hirai suggested that any future Sony gaming handheld would have an advantage in the control scheme department. "Depending on the game, there are ones where you can play perfectly well with a touch panel. But you can definitely play immersive games better with physical buttons and pads. I think there could be games where you're able to use both in combination."
The rumored PSP 2 is said to have a touch-sensitive panel on the back face of the unit that you could simultaneously access while using the controls at the front of the handheld.
Hirai also addressed the possibility of a games-playing PlayStation Phone, which has been prematurely revealed by tech site Engadget. Hirai told the New York Times that if Sony did release both a PlayStation smartphone and a PSP2, the company would have to be careful not to confuse consumers. "We don't want gamers to be asking, 'What's the difference between that and a PSP?' We have to come up with a message that users will understand. It would have to be a product that keeps the PlayStation's strengths intact."
