Why Microsoft’s Acquisition of Canesta Is A Big Deal

by Ben Reeves on Oct 29, 2010 at 03:15 PM

The 3D imaging and technology company, Canesta, announced today that it has just signed a letter of intent to be acquired by Microsoft. You may never have heard of Canesta before, but this deal could have giant repercussions within the fields of PCs, video games, and consumer technologies.

Canesta is one of the world leaders in the development of gesture recognition technology. Its cameras are capable of recognizing facial expressions and hand gestures that can be used to control electronic equipment. Canesta’s technology has already been used – to some degree – in Sony’s EyeToy accessory, and is very similar to Microsoft’s Kinect, which is on the brink of release.

Given Microsoft’s sizable girth in the consumer electronics field, it will be exciting to see how the company utilizes this new technology in the coming decade. We’ll likely see our electronic devices gain an extra layer of motion-based functionality. Our machines have been blind for a long time, and devices like Kinect are likely just the beginning of a new era of human/machine interaction.
