Sony: PSP Go Confused Consumers

by Tim Turi on Feb 23, 2010 at 05:36 AM

Sony’s digital-only handheld hasn’t been a raging success. Sony has been dodgy about officially commenting on the shaky launch of the portable system, but it's recently gone on record admitting that the PSP Go confused consumers. The company plans to re-communicate the system’s purpose.

Speaking to IndustryGamers about whether the PSP Go was about alleviating piracy, Sony senior vice president of publisher relations Rob Dyer says “We wanted to find a way to give the consumers what they want, so if they didn't want to go to a retailer they could stay at home and download [games and content]. And we were hoping really to eliminate the piracy issue."

Did the PSPgo confuse [consumers]? Yeah, I think the higher price point didn't help matters any either," admitted Dyer. "So we're going back and re-communicating, and I'm sitting here looking at multiple decks on what we're going to do this year. You'll see a lot of things coming out from us to better educate and inform the consumer. All I can say is watch this space, because we'll have answers to those questions.”

I’m still confused by that PSP Go. I’m looking forward to seeing how Sony rebuilds excitement in a handheld that barely supports the PSP’s already lacking catalog of games. This sounds faintly reminiscent PSP Go relaunch rumors from earlier this month, but Sony denied those.
