28,275 PSPgo Units Sold At Japanese Launch

by Tim Turi on Nov 02, 2009 at 05:43 AM

The PSPgo is out on Japanese store shelves, and the numbers are in. Sony’s redesigned handheld, which relies exclusively on downloaded games instead of UMDs, found its way into the pockets of 28,275 Japanese consumers when it launched this past Sunday.

Persona 3 Portable, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, and Disgaea reinforced the system’s launch, along with older titles recently made available for download. Keep in mind that Japan gets all the awesome PSone downloadables we don’t (like Resident Evil 2 and 3) so new PSPgo owners will have those portable gems waiting for them, also.

Since the original PSPs launch on December 12, 2004, Sony reports that the system had sold 12,797,180 units prior to the PSPgo’s launch last weekend. The Nintendo DSi’s launch in November saw 170,000 systems sold in the first two days, while the PSP-3000 sold slightly over 140,000 units in its first four days the month before.

How does 28,275 units sold in Japan sound to you folks? It sounds a little disappointing to us. How do you think the console will fare over the next couple months?
