Upcoming PS4 Update Adds External HDD Support
Sony is sending out beta invites for the next PlayStation 4 system update, giving players who signed up for the program a chance to get an early look at system update 4.50. This one adds several new features, including a much-requested one: the ability to use an external hard drive with the console.
Once the update is live, you'll be able to connect a USB 3.0 external hard drive or up to 8 TBs up to the PS4 and use it for games and other applications. It's a great option for players who travel frequently but don't want to lug a console around or for people who are too squeamish to dive into their console and replace the existing drive with a larger one (even though it's not that difficult). External drives are generally cheaper, too, which makes the option appealing.
The menus are also getting tweaked. The notification list is now a consolidated list instead of a page with several tabs of organized information, and the quick menu has been retooled to take up less screen space. If you're into sharing, you'll be able to post text, screenshots, and gifs into your activity feed.
The update also adds the ability to create custom wallpapers based on screenshots, and adds support for 3D Blu-rays on PSVR.

I upgraded my hard drive last year, and I still don't know what took me so long. Having that additional storage space is increasingly important, and it's great to see Sony offer an alternative way to add it. And yes, Xbox One fans, we all know you've been able to do this since basically forever.
