Titanfall 2’s Multiplayer Tech Test Not Coming To PC

by Joe Juba on Aug 15, 2016 at 08:39 AM

Respawn Entertainment’s upcoming sequel to Titanfall is releasing on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. However, one of those platforms is being left out for the open multiplayer tech test that’s coming before the game’s launch.

Respawn CEO Vince Zampella explains in a blog post the reason behind excluding the PC crowd from Titanfall 2’s test run, which officially boils down to the fact that individual PC configurations are too diverse and the game hasn’t been tested for compatibility yet.

“We’re still making a lot of tweaks and changes to the renderer, the game, and effects so we haven’t run the game through the hardware compatibility lab yet to detect and handle a large variety of hardware - video cards, CPUs etc,” Zampella says. “Quite frankly, we aren't ready to deal with that yet, we are still making the game better.”

Beyond that reasoning, Zampella also mentions that PC users could potentially go through the game’s code and unearth details the team would rather keep hidden. “We also have to worry about leaks,” he says. “Our wonderfully curious PC players have proven in the past that they will dig out anything they can, and there's a risk that they could spoil some of our single player.”

PS4 and Xbox One players will still be able to participate in the test as planned, though the exact dates have yet to be announced.

Our Take
While Respawn’s explanations seem plausible, this is still a blow to a sizeable community of gamers who were looking forward to logging some early time on Titanfall 2. Also, though it was mentioned more as an aside, I imagine that the concern over data-mining in the PC version probably trumps early performance and compatibility issues. Whatever the primary cause, it’s too bad that some fans don’t get to play along.
